Critiquing Photographs

Food photography can be surprisingly technical, but it also has the ability to create emotion, warmth, and connection, and I think this image does exactly that. One of the reasons I selected this photo is because of how the lighting and composition bring the food to life. You can see the texture and details clearly. From the crisp edges to the subtle shadows that create depth. It almost feels like you could reach in and grab a bite, which is exactly the feeling good food photography is supposed to create.
I also love how the color tones in the photo complement each other. There’s a warmth to the shot that makes it feel inviting, like you’ve walked into a cozy kitchen or stumbled upon the perfect plate at a restaurant. It draws the viewer in and makes them curious about the setting beyond the frame.
I wrote a comment on Amelia Oakes blog post. I said "This is such a cool shot! I love how you were able to capture the movement of the fireflies so clearly — it almost feels like you can see them dancing across the field. The little glowing trails really make the photo feel alive and give it such a peaceful, summer night vibe. It’s so different from how we normally just see them blinking around randomly. You did an amazing job bringing out that motion and making it feel intentional."
